. All went well with that. 4 days later, she went in for the upper GI. This did not go so well. The initial phase of the test went very well, with the barium
would not pass thru her stomach. No luck. After a short while, she became very very tired and almost lethargic. One more x-ray revealed no movement, and was instructed to go somewhere (home, cafe', ect
.) and try to eat or drink something, anything, to get this stuff to pass thru. She became nauseated and "lost" about 40% of the barium on the curb 2 blocks from the hospital. Medical staff instructed me to return her to the radiologist in approx. 90 minutes, which we did. The x-ray at this time revealed the remaining 60% of the barium still sets in her stomach, with just very minute trace amounts passing into the small bowel. Just enough for the radiologist to see that there appeared to be no blockage.
Is this normal? Should we be concerned by the "shortened" test? What might the next step be?

This sounds to me like either she had a bad reaction to the barium OR her stomach is not emptying properly and she could have something like gastroparesis going on. I had a barium test done which said my stomach wasn't emptying properly so they ordered a gastric emptying scan and found I had gastroparesis, severely delayed stomach emptying. She could have a motility problem in her stomach. I would ask for a gastric emptying test to see how her stomach functions and go from there.
