feeding tube nutrition celiac disease

by jack803, Aug 01, 2008 09:46AM
My 73 yo Mother  recently dx with celiac and CA small bowel. Now post surgical (3 surgeries in 70 days...problems I do not wish to go into now.).  They will attempt to insert a feeding tube due to obstruction (sprue related is best guess).  How do I go about finding "food" that she can tolerate through the feeding tube. Is it prescription? Will medicare cover any of the cost for at home health care?

thank you,
john hays

Jack, there is an Ensure Powder that is used for tube feedings that is used for those with celiac disease. It is also lactose free as well. Those at the hospital should be able to direct you to sources of that and other formulas. I'm sure not about medicare coverage. Again, check with the hospital for possible resources for your questions. Alternately, call a local home health agency and speak to an administrator. They're typically very helpful in answering questions on coverage.
