gallbladder & gastric bypass

hi
my mum has had her gall bladder removed and had a gastric bypass done on the 1st may she is still in hospital because the is to much bile coming from her tummy into her drain, the hospital will not let her come home until the bile has slowed down which is understandable, but the doctors don't know why the is so much bile coming from her tummy they have to empty the drain quite often and fit a new bag. has this happened to anybody? they did talk about fitting a stent, they have done blood tests and they are going to do another scan but so far they have no idea what to do.

It's possible that there's a leak coming from the cystic duct. This is the duct that runs from the body of the gallbladder to the common bile duct. They typically use a small metal clip to seal it off, but depending on the 'stump' it can leak. But a leak can also result from damage to the common bile duct itself. You need to ask the doc about where they feel the leak is coming from.

A stent can be placed inside the common bile duct to 'expand' it. It would then be left in place so that where ever the leak is, it would be blocked by the stent and the 'leak' would be allowed to close up.

This situation unfortunately does happen.
