and recently have been having some stomach issues that are not related to GERD. I had an ultrasound 2/5/09 and it showed multiple polyps in my gallbladder along with 2 polypoid lesions that are 3-4mm adhered to the wall. What does this mean and also can gallbladder issues affect the liver as my liver was slightly enlarged
Laurie, you may want to talk with your doc about the presence of the polyps and the polypoid lesions. If they are of significant size, and/or they're blocking the outlet of the gallbladder to the cystic
duct, you doc may recommend gallbladder surgery. Polyps in the gallbladder can be a precursor to cancer as they are in other organs. In the past the recommendation was for gallladder polyps to be 'watched' and if they reache 'x' size, then it was suggested that the GB should 'go.' However, I believe the current recommendations suggest that GB surgery may want to be considered sooner rather than later.
If that is the case, make sure you understand that removing that organ may change the way you process fats and that following a low fat diet may be of help after the surgery.
Problems with the GB can impact the liver, but it's typically the presence of stones or sludge that would do that, not polyps. Make sure you ask if any sludge was seen.
