gas pain - fundiplication surgery

by kmh1213, May 16, 2007 12:00AM
my mom had fundiplication surgery in february 2005 for acid reflux. ever since the surgery, she has terrible gas pain daily. we can't find anything to help her. she wouldn't make it through a reversal surgery(she also has interstitial lung disease). she has tried everything we've heard of to help. she can no longer eat regular meals, she eats several times a day, but very small amounts. she has lost tons of weight. it seems absolutely ridiculous to me that there isn't something out there to get rid of her gas pain. her lung disease is terminal, but the gas is causing her the most pain. any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. thank you!

A 24-hr pH study can be considered to ensure there isn't residual reflux.  An upper endoscopy also can be done to exclude anatomical causes or strictures that may lead to the symptoms.  This can also look for ulcers or inflammation of the upper digestive tract.

If negative, you can also consider an abdominal ultrasound to exclude liver or gallbladder causes.

These options can be discussed with a gastroenterologist, or a second opinion can be obtained at a major academic medical center.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

To: Side Effects from nissen fundoplication
For the past 15 months since my wrap was done I have thought at times I was going to die from the pain. I have lost 60 pounds which was fine with me, but just not the way and pain I have gone through to lose it. Today...I went for a sonogram of my gallbladder......guess what........I now have gall stones. I guess now I will be having surgery once again to remove my gallbladder. The pain I have been living with has been unreal. I can not even eat broth any more without getting sick. Anything I eat makes my upper stomach swell up like I am 9 months pregnant and at times you can fill with your hand the gas moving around just like a baby is in there. I have found out that women get gallstones much more than men do and if you lose weight to fast this will case them. Well that is me for sure. I am a 49 yr.old woman and I lost 40 in 3 months. I honestly do not think I could live like this for the rest of my life. Hopefully I will not have to now that they know what could be causing the main problem. OK now for the bathroom probs......I do not go far from a toilet. I never know when it is going to hit, and when it does I better be real close to a toilet.    I encourage anyone that has had the nissen wrap and are having these probs go NOW and get a sonogram of there gallbladder......Good Luck to all of you..I will keep an update of my progress after the surgery.....Anyone that would like to talk with me please fill free to email me at   ***@****

To: hi melanie
my name iswanda and i had the wrap 2 weeks ago,i have had diahrrea every time i try and eat a bite and hurt so bad when i eat or drink anything.i have lost almost 30 pounds in 2 weeks and i have already had my gallbladder out a month prior to this wrap.they found a non functioning gallbladder when they were trying to find out my problem with the acid reflux.i coughed everytime i ate or drank anything ,thats why i had to go about the reflux,i stayed hoarse all the time and could not talk, and stayed sick to my stomach all the time.the gallbladder helped with my severe headaches i had been having for a long time and the sickness and shoulder pain i kept having.but now i have to deal with the not being able to eat because i hurt so bad in my chest, stomach and back,to the point where i almost have to go to the emergency room, and that is from runny instant potatoes and not even a baby food jar size.i did not think it was going to feel like this when he said my flap was staying open all the time and i had to have the surgery or get barretts eso[hagus sooner or later.and i have severe gas pains all the time.i am 42 and feel like i am 80 some times because of the pain.i have fibromialgia (fibromyalgia) i wonder if that is helping my pain be worse?my email is ***@****   if you would like to write.thanks, wanda
