gastritis, nausea, vomiting

Beginning last Sept., I began to feel nauseous after eating. It started out subtly (only once a week), and a Tums or other OTC antacid would remedy the nausea. I also had diarrhea about once a week. Then in mid-Oct., I began to vomit, with severe and frequent intensity. When I am nauseous, I belch alot, and I experienced significant bloating in the first month. Often, the nausea will erupt before, during, and just after a bowel movement. Blood tests revealed antibodies to H.Pylori. Blood test results for liver imbalance were negative. Stool test results for parasites, salmonella, and blood were negative. The 'triple therapy' of two antibiotics (Biaxin, Flayl) and a proton pump inhibitor (Nexium) was prescribed for two weeks around Nov. 1. In the second week, I began to feel much better. After the treatment, the nausea and vomiting came back. I was prescribed Nexium, Prevacid (another H pump inhibitor) and Reglan (for motility) at different times. Nexium and Prevacid have not seemed to help. Neither has Reglan. I had an endoscopy done in early December. I exhibited mild chronic esophagitis and gastritis.  A medium hiatal hernia was also found. Biopsy results for stomach cancer and H.Pylori were negative.  Recently, I had an ultrasound done on my gallbladder. Results were again negative. Consistently throughout the ordeal, the two constants have been excessive burping while I am nauseous and nausea being brought about by a bowel movement. It has been four months of vomiting now, and I have lost about 8 lbs.

Ask your doctor for a gastric emptying test. This will measure the rate that your food digests. If you have a stomach motility disorder, it will cause the nausea, bloating, etc. It is an easy test, you eat a small meal with an isotope (no taste), and they will take a series of x rays as the food progresses (or not) through the digestive tract. This is basically the only test whether you have this disorder. Reglan is sometimes used for this, but there are better drugs. Motility disorders can occur throughout the digestive tract. It is often misdiagnosed as IBS, because of the bowel symptoms. The medical name for this is gastroparesis, if you want to search the web for more information. People have different symptoms and levels of severity, not everyone has the same set of symptoms, that is why it is often missed by doctors. They can also come and go. Worth a shot, since you've had everything else done.
