gastritis? autoimmune disorder?

by Ken__0, Oct 06, 1998 12:00AM

about 4 weeks ago, I was eating large meals lake at night and drinking pretty heavy for 4 days straight. I was at a labor day party and ate hamburgers, the next day I was vomiting and had diahrea with a 100.5 fever for 24 hours. the next day I thought I was over it and began to feel a little better, but since then I have no appetite, am real nausea's, lost 10 pounds and have been running a low grade fever of a range from 98.8 to 99.2. the fever starts around 11:00 am and continues to 10:00 pm then it drops.I had stool cultures taken and they came back negative, then the doctor did an endoscopy and determined that I have gastritis, he said i would feel better in a week, it has been 4 weeks and I still have fever and a nausea feeling mostly in the morning. he took much more blood work, my cbc wbc count was a little low 3.9, but the thing that concerns me is the ana titer test came back positive , range is 1-80 it came back 1280, he says this indicates i have an autoimmune disorder, so he is taking more blood work, I don't know much about this autoimmune condition, but I am really beginning to get scared, from a case of suspected food poisening to autoimmune disorder, I also read somewhere that anitbiodics could cause a false positive in this test, I was on cipro for 4 days when the bloodwork was taken. any reply to this condition would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Ken ***@****

Dear Ken,
I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. I am not exactly sure what is causing your symptoms.  You may have contracted an infection that iscausing your fever and nausea. I would suggest the following steps-
1) blood cultures, preferably taken during the peak of the fever, and 2) multiple stool  examinations and cultures (at least three).
I do not know the significance of the positive ANA titer but I agree that an autoimmune workup is needed.  Remember that the initial sympptoms could have been related to the autoimmune disease and not to an infection.
To my knowledge, ciprofloxacin is not associated with an increase in the ANA titer.
If your symptoms persist, then you should discuss with your primary physician, possible referral to a rheumatologist.
