gastrointestinal surgery

I want to know side effects relating to removal of most of the descending colon and if total removal is necessary when the diverticulitis became an abcess (abscess) and a fistula formed to connect to the vagina.  No acute symptoms at this time, on a digressing regimine of antibiotics for c-diff and patient has only had this single occurring problem of divertic. since feb.9, 2009?  Will bowel function be normal?  will sex be normal?
