heartburn and blood in stool

heartburn and blood in stool

I am 38 and male.  I have suffered from heartburn for a coule of years now but occasionally I am finding blood in my stools as well.  I do have piles which bleed when I wipe some times but I know the difference between the 2.  When this has happend in the past it has only occured once and then nothing for a couple of months.  The stools are wet and soft but not diahrrea.  The blood is red and quite bright.  I am a worrier and have been diagnosed with anxiety.
The blood has happend again today and it was more than normal but not enough to colour the bowl, more just on the toilet paper but there was some in the bowl as well.

Usual advice - seek medical attention - look up all possible causes so that you are well informed for your doctor's visit (type in rectal bleeding to google/yahoo and click on one of the many sites - the Medicinenet site is informative).  Unless the diagnosis is certain that the cause is minor (anal fissure, haemorrohids etc) then request a colonoscopy.
