hep c treatment/tsh levels

by apr03, Mar 28, 2009 05:49PM
In 1999 I had my thyroid removed for cancer, in July 2008 I started treatment for Hep C.  My thyroid blood levels have gotten all out of whack.  T3 and T4 are back to borderline normal however tsh is at 67.70. We are constantly adjusting my synthroid levels. I just had an MRI on my pituitary, it was normal.  I have blood work pending on my prolactin and acth. I have been splitting 125 mcg. but my doctor now wants me to half a 175mcg. I know that one of the side effects of this treatment relates to thyroid problems. Please, can you offer me any advice.

Well, could be as you suggest that the Hep C treatment is possibly causing your levels to be all over the place.  I do know from having a thyroid problem myself ages ago, that I and others had a terrible time getting the medications at the right level.  It's tricky.  Do what the doc says, the tests don't lie, but also go by how you FEEL.  You don't want to get too speeded up and you don't want to get too slowed down, is the main thing.

I had only my left thyroid gland removed due to a tumor in 2002.  I have since been on 50mcg's of Synthroid and they have never changed my levels.  I don't feel anything when taking this pill, but guess I don't need too, unless my levels come back abnormal.  I would guess it might have to do with your HEP C.  For me I have always believed trying to get the right dosage of Synthroid (if you are taking that) is a guessing game.  They will lower it and turn around and raise it.  My fiancee has hypo-thyroidism and they are constantly changing his levels.  I agree with ggreg.  Could be the HEP C treatment sending everything out of whack.  Follow your instincts and stalk to your PC about it. Hope you get to feeling better.
