horrible pain under sternum

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I am 57 and have been experiencing pain like a tight band just under my sternum Some times it goes in to my chest and I feel as if it might be my heart as It is often accompanied by a feeling of dread and a kind of stomach lurching feeling. It seems worse in the morning when it appears to affect my breathing. It just will not go away. My bowels are affected too and I don't know where to turn. I take omeprezole once a day which tends to make me dizzy. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you,

Hi,

After a barium swallow it seems I have a motility problem and a hiatus hernia. I have been given omeprazole to take but still have pain although less frequently. However my whole digestive system is not the best and I also have IBS .

First things first. You need to make sure the pain is not cardiac in origin. Doing an ECG and cardiac enzymes level would exclude the most dangerous cause.
After that, it might be useful to visit a gastroenterologist since the pain you are describing looks to arise from your oesophagus or your stomach. You may have some kind of inflammation there and need to be treated properly.
I hope it will help. Keep us posted. Best regards.
