My niece has been hospitalized 6 times in the last 2 months after her surgery to get a J pouch. She has been dehyrated, had pouchitis, had cdiff 3 times and is currently in the hospital again. She is 95 pounds and has been getting nutrition through a port in her upper arm for the past 2 weeks. She cannot keep food down so they are doing a scope to see why again! Is there any hope for her to recover with numerous setbacks?
Kathy, hopefully they'll be able to pinpoint the problem, correctCorrect (new formula) it and get your niece back to normalNormal saline flush before too long. Pouchitis is one thing, but having C. diff can be very, very difficult on the GI system. Even people in the best of health who end up with C. diff have an extremely difficult time getting better.
Considering she's had pouchitis, I hope at some point in time that her doc or your niece will consider trying some probiotics like VSL#3. They have a very good clinical track record of helping with pouchitis, and they probably wouldn't be a bad idea because of the recent history of C. diff.
