is it possible

by HURTN4CERTN313, Apr 06, 2009 10:18AM
my wife was diagnosed and treated in '06 for diverticulitus. she was then 36 yrs. young. my question is...... is it possible she could be healed? she has been vigilant with her diet and would like to indulge in some of those foods or spices once in a great while, at least in very small porportions.

Diverticulitis unfortunately doesn't heal. Once those pouches form, a person isn't able to reverse the process. Hopefully, she's maintaining a high fiber diet which purportedly should help to keep the pockets clean. And if she hasn't had any problems since '06 it sounds like she's doing a good job.

Supposedly, the only foods she shouldn't eat (and this is controversial at this point) are foods that are small and seedlike that could end up in the pouches and cause infection.

I'm not sure there are any spices that are suggested to cause problems........did her doctor say there were?

The doctor says no pepper, if you consider it a spice

I don't know why her dr said no pepper.  The foods to avoid are popcorn, seeds etc and foods that don't digest easily.   Sounds like her diverticulitus is not inflamed and she is doing well at this time.  Was it a gastro dr. that told her not to eat pepper?  Did she have other stomach problems at that time?  She should be able to eat anything in moderation at this time.  Just watch for signs of a flare-up and call the gi dr if it occurs.
