is this an allergy?-vomiting

by earthangel, Dec 09, 2002 12:00AM
I have vomitted three times this year. in january I had a prepared pasta primavera. that night my stomach was so sore I induced vomiting. only the vegetables came up - nothing I had eaten after.
In June I had hummus and woke up that morning with my stomach so sore and I had garlic seeping from my pores I didn't vomit but I passed out. I went to the emergency room and they told me It was probably food poisoning although I was fine after I came to.
In December I had family over for dinner and had made cabbage rolls for dinner. That night I woke up again to an extremly sore stomach. This time all I could smell on me was onion from the meat. I threw up but again I did not throw up anything I had eaten after. I called my family and there was nothing wrong with them.
My mother asked around and she had been told of an allergy to bulbed foods (onion, garlic). Although, I eat them all the time and don't always have a reaction to it.
Could you please give me your thoughts on my situation?
Thank-you

There are many causes to nausea and vomiting -- and you need to go through testings to rule out if it is not the galbladder, liver, stomach, colon, or a parasite.  And sometimes it can be our head!  So before you make a judgement on foods allergy make sure you go to a gastroenterologist.  And one thing I tell everyone, here in the US we're well sedated compared to the rest of the world -- so nothing to worry about with tests.

I agree, it's best not to guess.  There's so many different things that can happen in the stomach.  You need to put this in the hands of a good doctor.

ask for a stomach emptying test, you may have a stomach motility disorder. That is where the stomach has a hard time digesting some foods, especially foods high in fat or fiber. The fact that these episodes all occurred after ingesting vegetables might indicate that as a culprit. The test is easy. Try sticking to the lower fiber foods, although it's hard to give them up. The symptoms can come and go, so it's often hard to detect. The gastric (stomach) emptying test is the only test that will identify this problem, plus it is a lot less invasive than most tests.
