Pre-surgery, there should be an esophageal motility study to confirm that there are no esophageal motility problems that would cause post-operative problems (specifically, an inability to swallow solid food). If your mother complans of much bloating, a gastric emptying study should also be done preoperatively.
If the fundoplication is done via the laparoscopic technique, hospitral stays are very short.
