life after a total gastrectomy

by Carmella, Aug 13, 2001 12:00AM
In February my 69 year old father underwent surgery for stomach cancer.  They removed the tumor and approximatley 75% of his stomach.  He is now able to eat, albiet smaller quantities of food.  Unfortuneately, three months worth of severe chemo did not stop the tumor's growth.  This week we found out that they need to perform another endoscope because of a 3x4cm growth in the stomach area.  The doctor's may suggest a total gastrectomy, which my father is totally against.  I am seeking any individual, preferably one in his age group, who has undergone a total gastrectomy who could give us insight as to the quality of life without a stomach.  Please, anyone who can assist, I would appreciate it.  Time, as always with cancer, is of the essence.  Thank you.

I had a total gastrectomy on 9/28/01 because of adenocarcinoma-stomach cancer.  When the pathology report come back after surgery they still found cancer cells in the donut portion where they attached the intestine to the esophagus so about 6 weeks later, after I regained a little strength, they removed more intestine and most of my esophagus.  It definitely was major surgery but I'm glad I had it done.  It has been quite an experience learning how to eat which has been mostly just trial and error for me, however, would have been so-o-o beneficial to have some sort of a support group or someone to bounce things off of.  The medical profession are good at what they do but really have no idea.
