liver accutane and vitiligo

by jimbo2000, Oct 17, 2002 12:00AM
I took 2 rounds of accutane during fall 98 and summer 99. I noticed some skin discoloration during that period. At that time, I was unaware of the condition called vitiligo.

In 2000, I was diagnosed with Vitligo. It turns out that I have a family history. One of my parents and granparent had it too. But it was barely noticeable in their case.

When my derm conducted some tests on my liver (lipid panel, CBC etc) in fall of 99, we noticed some abonormally high enzyme levels in my liver. My liver was also acting up when I was accutane...that was expected.

My question is: Did the liver abnormalities caused by accutane trigger my vitiligo? I might have a genetic predisposition toward Vitiligo, but I seem to strongly believe that the acutane actually triggered my Vitiligo.

Please provide your opinions. Thank you.

jimbo,

I experienced a similar story --- several months after initiating my accutane treatment back in 1999, I noticed 2 small points of depigmentation on the right side of my chin.  This points have since developed significantly and now cover the better part of the lower right side of my face.  Have you found any evidence that this was triggered by the accutane treatment? I am fairly confident that this condition may even have been caused by accutane, since it does not appear anywhere in my family history.

Thanks for the help
