liver function tests

I am a 50 year old male and have been drinking heavily for the past 35 years and I smoke as well.  I usually don't drink during the week for the last 15 years approx just on the weekends but I do drink to excess then.  I have recently had 3 series of liver tests Dec 23/08  ALT 104/ AST 57   / ALP 40  / Bili 13
                                     Jan 23/09   ALT 250/ AST 156 /             / Bili 14
                                     Feb 26/09   ALT 216/ AST 131 / ALP 53/ Bili Direct <2 /Ferritan 632 / TIBC  74 / Iron 22    GGT 101

Just wondering what all this means.  The family doctor is talking about sending me for an ultrasound and then on to see a specialist maybe

There's no way to say what might be going on without a bit of testing beyond what you've had done. But even a few years of hard drinking can have a big impact on the liver. It's an organ you can't do without, so you may want to try to change things around a bit.

Are we talking cirrhosis?  I did not abstain from alcohol during this time, I have tried to cut back a bit though and I do not take any other medications.

Basically, it means that for whatever reason it appears that your liver is being impacted. If your doc suggested that you quit drinking while you had the tests and you did, the referral to a specialist might be a good suggestion. However, if you didn't abstain from alcohol and you were taking any other meds (unless your doc specifically said you need to take medication) - including aspirin - during the period of Jan to February, you may want to trying doing that and have a retest done to see if the weekend drinking has and is impacting your liver.
