You mean you have a red-ish section of your tongue with no bumps? (It's the only thing I can think that matches your description, so if it's not, ignore what I'm about to write.) It might be what's known as "geographic tongue." From what I know, it doesn't seem to be dangerous and it usually resolves itself. However, you'll want to see a doctor just in case, since it could mean something else entirely. Additionally, I recommend seeing a TCM (traditional Chinese medic -- usually an acupuncturist) since they can often tell of underlying conditions in the body (imbalances) which may first show up as what that.

(Example: I have a redder than normal spot in the middle of my tongue with little coating. My TCM said this was due to having a very weak stomach which didn't have enough "heat". Months later I was diagnosed with mild gastroparesis. She was right, the stomach WAS weak.)
