lower abdominal muscle cramps

by stephanomechanico, Nov 01, 2008 09:30PM
I am a 48 yr old male in good shape 5'9 200lbs. No family history of any diseases. 3 days ago, while standing in my yard chatting with a neighbor, my lower abdominal muscle tensed up, taking my breath away and making in difficult to talk. This occurred out of the blue. I went to the couch and layed down. My lower abdominal muscles were hard and tense. Getting up off of the couch was difficult as was walking upright. After 4 hours of this, I called my doctor. I was able to get in immediately. My temp was 99.1 and BP 120/90. I was told the 90 was a bit higher than it should be. The Doctor decided to have ultrasound of all the organs below the ribcage and bloodwork accomplished. He also prescribled prilosec for acid reflex. Not sure why, as this was not a symptom. I was clear that it was muscle spasms. He also specified a treadmill ekg with the radioactive dye and images of the heart. I was barely able to pull off the treadmill because I could barely stand. (support my torso)  After 2 more days of intense muscle spasms in the lower abdomen, upper and lower back, I decided to get a massage to alleviate the tightness in my back. At that time, my lower abdomen was relaxed but my back was killing me. After the message, my back felt great and when I got up off the table, something happened to start a very painfull 2 hour lower ab muscle spasm. My belly muscles were tight as a drum. My only relief was on my knees, curled up in the fetal position on the floor. It took a full two hours for the muscles to relax. Later in the day, I got my test results back. Heart is OK. Blood work OK. All organs OK except that a high amount of polyps were found on the gall bladder. I should also mention that during this entire time, I had lost my appetite, although I knew I had to eat something so I did eat a little. My doctor is at a loss for what is going on and I am looking for help. This all started on Wed. It is now Saturday and the sporadic abdominal and back pain is subsiding and I can now get up off the couch and walk, but I feel tender in the flank area and am being very careful to take it easy before resuming my normal routine. Does anybody out there have any insight as to what could be going on.

Thanks for your reply. If it is either of these two conditions, what can I do to pinpoint the diagnosis and what should I do as follow up. I am up and about today, but feeling a little aprehensive about getting back into my normal routine as I am afraid of injuring my tender ab and back muscles. I am going on a walk for starters. Also, should I ask to see an Internal Med specialist. My current Doc is a general physician and I don't have much confidence in him.
