mucus and blood with diarrhea

by woodrose, Jun 01, 2008 09:04PM
I am a 57 year old female.   I had 4 children so I am sure I have remainders of roids.  I am experiencing naucious feelings, gas, abdominal cramping and diarrhea with bloody mucus.  I can't wander far from home or a discreet bathroom.   I don't dare eat.  I tried plain yogurt but the result of that was not pretty.  I really thought the bacteria would help.  I have just experienced severe  stress in my life (my dog died)  but could this actually effect my body so severely?  the blood is bright red.  The urgency for diarrhea often results in just gas and almost clear mucus with a bit of red blood.  In general I don't feel so great and I thought it was because I am so sad about the dog...
I don't have a family doctor so should I just do a walk in?
Thanks so much for the help

How long all this lasts?

It sounds like food poisoning or water poisoning, which causeds bacterial (or parasitic) infection. Intestinal bleeding often occurs in severe infection e.g. from E. coli bacteria.

In most cases, these infections heal on its own. You should drink water to replenish lost fluid from diarrhea. If you'll get dizzy, this is a sign of dehydration, so you have to drink. If in five days symptoms won't improve, you should have a stool culture test and, if positive, treatment with antibiotics. DO NOT take antibiotics before the stool test, since this may lead to false negative results.

Try to eat, whatever you like, avoid only heavy fatty foods.

A lot of blood, high fever, profound weakness, or diarrhea > 5 days - these are reasons to see a doctor.

hello,
If you still have any of the symptoms of any blood at all in your stool you should definitely see a doctor as there is a possiblity of colon cancer.  I think I have blood and maybe mucous in my stool and went today though don't have any other symptoms.
God bless,
