nausea after surgery

by cookie1941, May 15, 2002 12:00AM
my husband just had a section of his colon removed. He was in
the hospital for 4 days.  Now that he's home everything he eats
is coming up.  What can I feed him that will stay down? What
can he drink? Ice water makes him vomit.

Call his doctor and see if he will prescribe an anti-nausea medication like pheneregan or something similar.  You can also have him suck on a sliver of fresh ginger root, placed between his teeth and gums.  The ginger root stops nausea.  Ginger ale is also a good drink when you have nausea.

thank you Nanny, I went out for some ginger ale and it seems
to be helping. Will also try the fresh ginger. I certainly do
appreciate your help.

zofran is an excellent anti nausea medication; does not cause drowsiness, very effective

Be careful if you take Zofran as it can cause constipation.  Phenergran works best for my nausea but unfortunately it makes me feel very drowsy.  If I feel nauseated I always start with sipping on ginger ale and most times that will settle my stomach.  Also, the herb, ginger root may help.  Good luck.
