night time nausea

For the past few months I've found that if I eat a light supper I wake about 2-3 a.m. very nauseous - I need to have a BM and have dry heaves/vomiting and lots of gas.  Why would an empty stomach cause me so many problems?  I have lost 2 nights sleep this week alone from this problem!  I have even tried eating cereal before bed.  After the dry heaves I choke down some saltines just to make the nausea stop, but I am in no way hungry at the time.  What causes this reaction in the body?
