Hi, glad to hear your surgery went ok, I still have not gotten passed the severe gasAdjustable gastric banding Bacterial gastroenteritis Barium enema Blood gases Blood gases test Chagas disease Culture of gastric tissue biopsy Feeding tube insertion - gastrostomy Gas - flatulence Gastrectomy Gastrectomy - series and bloating. It'll be two years in May that I had the nissan and I've had nine hernias. Had an upper GI series yesterday and found out my small intestines are all on my left side and not across abdomen like every one else. I just don't understand how that could have happened. Surgeon suggested I get a second opinion, but I don't think my insurance will pay for second opinions. My surgeon thinks it's scar tissue on my small intestines and he is reluctant to do surgery--I am too-- I don't want to end up like Tammy Wynette. I hope you will be well soon--just eat slow and small frequent meals to prevent bloating. Happy Easter-granny
I go in for laparoscopicGallbladder removal Gynecologic laparoscopyfundoplicationHiatal hernia repair ( reflux surgery) next Friday. Those of you that have had this procedure, do you have any thoughts or words of wisdom here? I currently control my reflux/heartburn through 40mg Nexum. It works great but don't want to stay on drug treatment for the rest of my life. One of my concerns is not having the ability to regurgitate. Also in reading some of the side effects I am not so sure I want to go through with it. Would love to alleviate my reflux/heartburn but not sure if I want to live with the side effects, especially when Nexum currently works well. Any advice would be more than appreciated.
If nexium is helping you, why would you even consider having the nissan surgery. Lots of people have good results, but if you notice, none of them will tell us. I have not come across anyone who is happy with the end results. If my medication would have helped, I would NEVER have have this procedure done. You cannot vomit and when you feel ill, it is a horrible feeling not to be able to vomit. I know you wanted to hear something better than this, but I believe the truth is always better and this operation is not good for life. So do some research before going into this blind-sided by our comments. If you want to have gas and bloating the rest of your life, then by all means have the operation. I think I would take my chances on the side affects of the medicine than the operation. Bless you in what ever decision you make. Keep us up-dated on what you decide--would love to hear from someone who had no after affects from the nissan-----but please be truthful.
Bionic Granny. Thanks so much for the response. Feedback from someone that actually went through the procedure was exactly what I was looking for. I would like to hear from someone that was happy with the surgery as well. I suppose folks like that might not be browsing this page. When I have asked my Dr. if he has a couple of patients that I could talk to he said no. I really have not been able to talk to anyone that actually went through it. Obviously the Dr.'s have given me very positive info. Excellent advice. Not being able to vomit was a large concern of mine - you confirmed that. I will continue to research through middle of next week.
I had the surgery the last week of February. I suffered from severe reflux and regurgitation. I had no luck with medication at all, but even if I had, I would have had the surgery, the idea of being relient on meds does not interest me.
The first three weeks were very hard. Really sore, I was worried that I would never be able to gulp a big glass of water again or eat more than a few spoonfulls of food at a time. Here I am two months later, and I'm 100%. My incisions are a little sore, and I occasionally get a little bloated after eating, but thats it. The nissan surgery completly changed my life back to how it used to be.
I'm 22 years old and I had been suffering for two years, and I'm finally feeling like myself again.
Good luck.
I recommend once you have had the surgery to really start very slowly with returning to solid foods. If you push it, the pain is awful, go slow, things will go back to normal.
Kate. Thanks for the response. Sounds like things have went well for you - glad of that. I imagine it has been too soon but what about regurgitation? Do you see this as a problem? I don't like the idea of being sick and not being able to get rid of it. Also now that you are 100%, are you experiencing problems with bloating? Are you able to belch (don't mean to be crass :-))?Let me know if you have time to respond. If there is anyone else out there that has positive or negative input - please chime in. Thanks. ChrisM
I just posted a comment under reflux...but I am one of the happy, successful surgery patients..and I would definitely do it again. I am 52 yrs. old with no previous health problems. About 5 yrs. ago I developed severe chest pain, chronic coughing, lost my voice, extreme fatigue. Was on Prilec for 3 yrs (among other medications) before going to the new Nexium (40 mg. twice a day). It did take me about a month to get to the point where I could eat what I wanted and without pain. I do have more gas than before the operation, but other than that.....no problems. I am not a big carbonated beverage drinker...however, now if I drink a coke or pepsi...I have no problem. I was in the hospital only one night....had minimal pain...and had an excellent doctor and surgeon.
Hi. My husband had that surgery 3 times and just had another bad surgery for the same stuff....it works for some but its highly likely it will come apart and you will be repeating it in a few years.....really think it through and research all of the risks. plus you will probally still be taking prilosec or another med even after surgery.
for anyone who may not know...nexium is prilosec, they gave it a new name because prilosec will be the "generic" name of it and nexium will go on as new...I am not making this up..we were told this by several gastro surgens.( my husband has been on prilosec for many years and been through many surgeries, he asked about the "new" nexium and was told this.)
