pain after removel

by dwrwebb, Jul 10, 2009 07:27PM
My gall bladder was determined to be diseased during my last pregnancy, and was removed after my daughter was delivered (by c-section).  In the time since then, I have had a few experiences with moderate to (occasionally) severe pain in the location where the gall bladder had been.  At one point I went to the emergency room, and eventually ended up having a barium enema.  Nothing was found on any of the tests.  I am now pregnant again, and the pain is back nearly all the time.  It often becomes debilitating.  No one can seem to provide a solution to the problem.  Usually the doctors just want to prescibe narcotic pain medicines, which don't even come close to fixing the problem.  My OB and PCP both suggested that it may be either adhesions, or the ducts that used to go to the gall bladder itself are now clogged and irritated

I to have the dibilating pain attacks after my gallbladder was removed mid 2007. I have had about 6 severe pain attacks that take my breath away which forces me to take short breaths while bending over. My attacks last about 30 minutes. It's located in my upper abdomen below my chest and radiates into the same area into my back. When I feel the attack coming on (and I don't know why I do this) I gulp down a glass full of whole milk and wait for it to take affect. The pain slowly goes away and I'm fine.
I found this website plus information about SOD, Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction. Which usually more women get after gallbladder removal. I was shocked to learn about this and believe this is what I have. I had my first attack just 12 hours after my GB surgery and still in recovery in the hospital bed and nobody told me what happened or why. I am seeing a homopathist right now because I don't want any of the surgerys that are recommended because from what I have read so far, it doesn't help anybody. And the pains after those surgerys are worse. (ERCP and MRCP)
I asked my homopathist Dr. if the whole milk helps or not. He could only say, maybe. And his explanation is that milk is fatty and that fatty relaxes the sphincter muscle so that the bile can enter the bile ducts and then into the small intestine. So far that is as far as I've gotten and waiting for my next attack so that the doctor can give me a blood test for my liver and pancreatic enzyme levels within 12 hours of the attack.
He also has me taking for right now Colacynthis once a day. That is taking 3 pellets and dissolving under my tongue. During my next attack, I'm to take 3 every 15 minutes.
I told him I don't think they will help me but I guess it's a beginning. I am scarred to death for another attack. So far there is no cure for it from what I've read, but there are studies for it going on.
All I can do is pray for my Dr. that he will help me.
Take care and keep me informed if you can.

I continue to be in pain, and although I do experience "attacks", I also suffer from a continuous pain.  It is essentially the same area, but the "attacks" are much more severe.  Generally speaking, the continuous pain is more than just a nuissance now.  I can barely function.  The ER does nothing but inject pain killers, and run some basic blood work.  There is obviously something mroe going on.  Because I am pregnant, I understand the options for test are a bit limited, but I have heard I could be "scoped" and that would be safe.  It may not find an answer, but it seems that would have a better chance of finding the problem than running the same blood panels time after time.  I now refuse to go to the hospital because it is essentially just a waste of time.   I go and sit in their beds for a few hours and sleep because of the pain meds...what a tremendous help...I realize many people experience similar symptoms to me after having their gall bladder out, and as you mentioned silversissy, it tends to be primarily women.  However, it seems to me most people describe their pain as attacks.  As I mentioned before, I do have attacks, but also the continuous pain, which seems to be getting worse.  My life and my family's life is suffering....I just dont know what to do....

Any one who is pregnant ( or was pregnant) with similar symptoms?  I feel my situation may be a little different, because I am pregnant.  My options are a bit more limited, as far as testing, and diagnosing, etc.  II'm sorry to keep posting, but this site and its community members seem to be among the best on the web, as far as I've seen.  I just really need help, and like many of you also know, the ER is no help, and I cant get in with a gastroenterologist until December.  My insurance is only accepted by this one doctor, so of course he is over booked.  I could pay cash at another doctor, but we really can't afford to do that.

I'm so sorry for you. I am not a doctor, so I can't say very much. But the continuous discomfort you have, I have to but not all the time. More like off and on throughout the day since the GB removal. I try to eat something throughout the day and I think It may help the little annoying discomfort. I'll eat a piece of toast in the morning with a little butter, later have a yogurt (any kind), later a bowl of cereal or instant oatmeal. I think keeping something in the stomack helps. In fact when I get the little discomfort it reminds me to eat a little something. I eat a piece of fruit, I eat a small salad, a taco, one egg, and I try to eat steamed veggies any kind 3 or 4 kinds steamed together, (no butter) just some garlic salt or regular salt, with any kind of potato, beans or brown rice. I may add a small piece of cooked meat as lean as possible. Sometimes I have a slice of toast with a little peanut butter. Eat a ffew almonds or any nut. Two or 3 cups of hot green tea (always with honey) and 2 cups of coffee in the morning. Just eat small, 4, 5, 6, times a day and see what happens.
Just start trying a few things and experiment. From what I read stay away from over the counter medicines, tylenol ect. When I had the last big attack 2 and half weeks ago, I remember I had taken a total of 4 extra strength tylenols that day before the attack. ?????  It was later that I read on the forum to stay away from tylenol, made me think.
