I had this.  Sometimes getting so sore that it was taking my breath away.  After I while I went to GP described my symptoms and he took a blood test which revealed helicobator pylori (think that's how it's spelt) it is the bacteria around the stomach which causes an ulcer and acid.  A weeks course of 3 separate antibiotics cleared it up.  Although I would still have to take Losac to stop an acid.  I have noticed foods like onions and spicy foods trigger this off.  I have been asked to keep a diary of what foods I am eating and when it flares up.  If it is the helicobater pylori, only antibiotics can treat it.
