Tmcwhirter, you're putting the cart WAY before the horse. There are a number of different things that can cause portal hypertension and many of those 'things' can be treated or contolled. Put your panic to rest and take a deep breath. People with portal hypertension can live good, long lives.

You've got to find the underlying cause of the hypertension. It isn't going to do you or your husband any good ro worry. Save that energy for the changes you'll probably need to help your husband make when you figure out what's causing this.
