prolonged Giardia symptoms

by MoonTea, Mar 10, 2002 12:00AM
I was in Nicaragua in April 2001, and I got giardia, a kidney infection, and colitus. The doctor had me on Flagyl for a while until I got canditis, so I got a pill for the yeast infection, and the doctor told me to stop taking the flagyl, and he did a test and said it was gone anyways. But a year later, I am still having weird stool. I still have mucus in my stool, and usually it gets worse after taking dairy products- milk shakes, cheese, etc. I am constantly bloated as well, and I have frequent urination which just strated about 3 months ago. I go every hour just about. I don't know what started this, but it all seems recent. My problem is, when I go to the doctor, they tell me everything is alright. So I really don't know what to do. Maybe you guys can tell me something? It doesn't burn oranythingw hen I go to the bathroom, and the stool doesn't hurt, it's just always really soft, it's not to the point of diarreah, but its not stiff like it used to be before the giardia, ever. How does giardia work? and where does the mucus come from?

I recently was disagnosed with giardia, and went through a course of flagyl which I finished last week and has left me with lingering symptoms (stomach pain, weird left back pain, diarrhea, weight loss, weak legs, crampy gut).  In talking with people who have had giardia, I have repeatedly heard stories of lingering effects... lactose intolerance, mysterious gut rumblings, etc.
I am working with an accupuncturist/herbalist to rebuild my "digestive fire," which is weak at the best of times, having been diagnosed with IBS ten years ago.
For what it's worth, your story does not seem to be unusual, and I would recommend getting some alternative help in building up your digestive system, and go easy on your gut-- look into food combining, food sensitivities (especially wheat and dairy which create a lot of mucous in the gut), and herbs such as ginger, pepper, cardomom, etc. to stimulate digestion.  Also, acidophilus and food enzymes might be helpful.
