re-anastamosis of small bowel to rectum

Six months ago I had total colectomy for diverticular disease.  Now have ileostomy.  Surgeon wants to rejoin what is left of the small colon to a miniscule portion of large bowel adjoining the rectum.  I am managing the Bag quite well.
I am 74yrs old and otherwise healthy, although I have lost 30kgs before, during and after surgery.  I now weight 50kgs.
I cannot see how further surgery, and possible diarrhoea for the rest of my life is a step in the right direction.  If I had more large bowel I might consider it.  I cannot get an 'honest' answer from Stoma Therapists, GP's on this matter,
but they seem to indicate that it isn't necessary.  i'm inclined to agree that further surgery is not the way to go.
Can someone in there help me please.   Thank you.
