Dear Gene,
It’s difficult to try and figure out what’s causing your abdominal pain without more details as to the character, location,
duration and radiation of the pain. It might also be helpful to describe aggravating and relieving factors for the pain. Donnatal elixir is a combination of phenobarbital, hyoscyamine, atropine and scopolamine. These medications have an analgesic, mild sedative and anti-cholinergic/anti-spasmodic effect on the gastrointestinal tract. It is often used for severe exacerbations in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Maalox is an antacid which helps to neutralize the acid in the stomach. It can be helpful in patients with gastroesophageal reflux and peptic ulcer. It has a rapid onset of action, but its effect does not last for very long. Lidocaine is an anesthetic and pain reliever. Hemangiomas in the liver are often asymptomatic, however, if they grow in size they can cause compression of surrounding structures and pain. If a hemangioma bleeds it can also cause pain. An imaging test of the liver such as an ultrasound, dynamic CT scan, MRI or tagged red cell scan may be useful in this regard. Your doctor can help determine the right test for you. I hope you find this information helpful.
