recent colonoscopy

by mindy317, Jul 24, 2009 09:30AM
Recntly I had a colonoscopy.  My prescribed colon prep consisted of two bottles of Mag Citrate and nothing else.  Because the prep did not seem to be producing adequate results I added three Ducolax tabs on my own.  I did get results, but nothing like my last colonoscopy, when I took a Fleet laxative.  And, incidentally, at the time of my last colonoscopy a polyp was removed from the anal area.

Anyway, when the colonoscopy was finished, the doctor told my husband that he had to constantly remove feces.   He did remove two polyps from the anal area.  My concern is whether this colonoscopy was valid due to the amount of feces present.  Should I have another colonoscopy next year or possibly sooner?  Another factor is that I had an aunt who died in her sixties from colon cancer.

Hi, I have so much experience with this, and have worked for GI doctors.  Normally if you are not totally cleaned out, they won't do the colonoscopy.  This is due to what you stated, they cannot get a clear view of the colon.  I would get a second one, but also from a different doctor.  If he found two polyps there may be more, and he doesn't sound like a good one to go to.

Thanks mammo.  This is what I feared.  Do you think I should get one right away, or can I wait until next summer.  My insurance only allows one per year, but if I made a case that this one was botched they might allow another one.  Don't know though.  I do know I won't be going back to that guy again.

Hi, if you could get your insurance to cover another one, (and I think they will when you explain) I would go ahead with it.  I know it's a big hassle to have to go through it again, but will give you peace of mind.  If not, just be vigilant in watching for any blood in your stool.  Polyps can be in your colon for a long time without causing any problems.  I'm glad you're seeng another doctor for your next one.  It was this doctor's fault that he didn't  give you the proper prep, and the next one won't use the the magnesium citrate.
Take care, and best of luck to you.............

Thanks so much again.  I will be calling my insurance company on Monday.  I am definitely a much more informed consumer this time around.  :- )
