recovery after j-pouch reversal

by bianca20, Aug 22, 2008 03:46AM
My daughter, 15, had j-pouch reversal surgery last week. She is still in a lot of pain while using the toilet. she is very sore and she uses the toilet roughly 20 times a day. How long does it take to physically recover and will the amount of times she has to use the toilet reduce soon? What can she expect?

I had my jpouch formed 5 weeks ago now, and for the first week, wondered what on earth I had done! now i am so glad I had it done.  Each week has been easier than the last, I have total control over when I go to the bathroom and although I still have days where I go more than others, and some days are more painful than others, I find that most of the time it is to do with what I have eaten.  On a good day I am now going maybe 4-5 times during the day and once during the night.  On a bad day, I could be going up to 10 times throughout the day and night.  Remember that it is a MAJOR surgery and it will take a while to get back up and running and for your visits to the bathroom to slow down and regulate.  I am now doing everything I could do before the surgery, in fact, more than before as I had issues with my stoma that stopped me from doing quite a few things.  Im driving, picking up and playing with my little 6 month old son, eating a more varied diet, exercising . . . . . the world is my oyster!!  I hope your daughter starts to feel better soon. . . . it will only get better and better!

I just had the take down surgery on sept 9th and I know your daughters surgery was before mine, but I know that as the bowl retrains the movements will get better.  taking imudium and metamucil will also help bulk it up which will ease the burn. Desitin with zinc oxide will also help.  Use baby wipes will also ease the soreness. Depending on how the j-pouch was actually surgically created, it will continue to improve over the course of a year.  The pouch stretches and learns to coordinate the rhythmic movements better the over time.      I have a lot of information and would be happy to anser any other questions.  I had UC.
