return of adhesions

by Bionic Granny, Aug 16, 2002 12:00AM
In May I had alot of adhesions removed from the ten surgeries I had in two years and they think they have returned again. Has anyone had lysis of adhesions and was successful? I know there are no gaurantees, but I was hoping for more than one month of being pain free.

What were your symptoms from the adhesons?

I had 2 lapros, Total Hyster & GB surgeries over the past 12 years. Upon the GB removal, my surgeon said he could not see my appendix due to adhesions. He was going to look at my appendix bec I was also having pain in my Right lower quadrant. My GB was found to also have adhesions & was diseased.

Here are my symptoms:
D (Diarrhea) & RLQ (Right lower Quadrant) started 3 weeks before GB surgery.
D & RLQ pain subsided for 2 weeks during GB recovery (possibly from narcotic pain meds).
D & RLQ pain returned after stopping pain meds, then subsided (somewhat) again when I took the pain meds. I only took a half of a Vicodin a day.
I do not have any nausea.
I have lower stomach bloating; At times I look 3 months PG.
Since July 16th I have only gone about 6 days without D.
I usually have 3-7 BM upon awakening. Very loose/watery stools.
Pain usually starts around 11 am then get worse towards nighttime.
Pain does not wake me up at night.
Pain in RLQ extends to my right lower back area too.
Pain, recently, has started around my belly button area.
No certain foods seem to make D better or worse. I have ruled out milk intolerance.

Cat Scan w/Barium, Blood Tests, Upper Sco
pe & Colonoscopy were all normal. Although I have not yet received my biopsy results from the colonosc yet. The Gastro doc said he thought the biospy would be normal.

I had a violent D reaction to the colonoscopy prep; Ended up in the hospital the evening before the test due to dehydration. During the prep, My D was purely "Neon Yellow" Bile. Triage nurse asked "Why in the world would you take 8 laxatives when you are having this kind of D??" I questioned the doc too before the prep & was told I still had to take them. After the test, the doc said I had the cleanest colon he had seen in a long time. Yeah, but what price & pain did I have to pay for it??
Gastro doc gave me a Rx for Colestid. I am only taking one at lunch.
I just had the colonoscopy on Friday, 8/16.

Because my Gen Surg said he could not even see my appendix due to the amount of adhesions, I tend to lean towards adhesions causing all this pain & D. But they can't see adhesions in a colonosopy. And they can't see the lower intestines in it either..right? This seems to be where the bloating is.
Because you've had adhesions, can you direct me to a good site for this? Also, did you have D?  If so, why would adhesions cause it? And finally, what did they do to find the adhesions? And what kind of doctor treats this?
Sorry this is so long, but I can't go on living like this. I am only 43 and want to enjoy life.
Thank you, AnnaM

Hi Anna, I'm not at home to get the info you want, but try a search for adhesions and if you come up with Dr.Gerhart, you can ask him questions. I got alot of info from him and I wish that I could go to New York and stay with my son so he could do my surgery. I did not have diahrea, only severe burning and stabbing pains with every movement and after eating. Mine have grown back, at least that's what they think. I will be having a gastroscope to rule out ulcers. Some days, I try not to eat, which is a stupid thing to do. I hope you can find the site. I won't be going home for two weeks, but if you can't find it, I'll try and get my husband to find it for me. I'll check in tomorrow, so let me know if you found it. I'll try to get it from here. (^.^)pat

I have experienced the same thing....right lower side pain, diarrhea, bloating, gas.  I had my gallbladder out 8/01 and still have the above problems.  Had adhesions and scar tissue surgeon said but she fixed that....so I live in daily misery also...just thought I'd share this with you in case you come up with any answers..I also have Crohns but this is not related to the Crohns and doctors and tests have revealed nothing.
