right rib pain

What can be the reason for pain under the right ribs, it mostly hurts at night after I have been asleep for a while, it wakes me up and I feel like my insides are all swelled up and I can't hardly move because it is so tight and painful. By the time I get up in the morning it is usually gone. Could it just be gas? Or something else more serious?
