ruptured appendix

Is it possible for laproscopy to cause an appendix to rupture?  My mom and seven aunts were nurses and said that surgery can cause a puncture or perforation, but a rupture technically occurs prior to surgery.  Is that correct?  My daughter-in-law had an LA last night for a ruptured appendix.  Thanks!

Technically, you mom and aunts are correct. A rupture is 'spontaneous.' A puncture/perforation can be due to insult by an instrument. However, a perforation can also occur due to a slow errosion via a biological process.
