secondary hyperparathyroidism after bypass

secondary hyperparathyroidism after bypass

I had a gastric bypass in 2001.  After many months and lab work, it has been determined that I have secondary hyperparathyroidism.  I have been prescribed 50,000 IU/week of Vit D, as well as a calcium + D supplement.  I am also taking 30mg of cymbalta since January, 325 mg of iron (2 tabs/day), multivitamin, acidophilus (gallbladder removed 3 weeks ago).  I have been diagnosed with depression and atrial arrythmia (sp?). I have had joint and bone pain, severe at times, and muscle weakness since summer of '08.
My research has shown that hyperparathyroidism symptoms include depression, atrial arrythmias, joint and bone pains, as well as the muscle weakness.

My main concern at this point is, what should I expect from the above treatments to "cure" the hyperparathyroidism, thereby, curing the symptoms?  I am taking prescriptions to alleviate the symptoms of the hyperparathyroidism and taking supplements to address the hyperparathyroidism.  When can I start to come off of the prescriptions?  I just want to feel healthy again!
Thank you for your help and consideration regarding this matter.

I see no one has responded to your question.  I had gastric bypass in 2002, and have just been recently diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism.  I did have low calcium level, so was started on supplements with vit d twice daily 2 yrs ago.  Now calcium level is low normal, vit d is normal, but PTH is 109.  I'm so tired, weak, shaky, increase confusion, etc that I can barely make it through the day.  My 1st appointment with the endocrinologist is not till next week.  I find very few people who have HPT with gastric bypass, so was really interested in your post.  Since my diagnosis, my surgeon switched me to calcium citrate with vit d 1800mg per day.  Have noticed no difference, but then again don't know how long it would take to see a difference, and have even found out that supplementation still will not curb the HPT.

Please let me know if you've found out any more info, and how you are doing.

I also have severe bone/joint pain, as well as muscle pain.  Have had to start taking pain meds because of this.  Also have abdominal pain, esophageal spasms, and just feel like I can't go on.  Would love to know more about this situation.  Thanks
