severe pain right side of stomach area by bottom rib

by kn__0, Oct 21, 1998 12:00AM

: : I have had upper GIs to see if I have an ulcer, hernia, or gallbladder problems, but nothing found.  About a month ago and again today
: : I experienced a severe pain from the front of my body near the stomach all the way
: : through to my back, and then radiating up to the sides of my neck
: : with an accompaning nausea feeling (although I did not get sick).
: : I tried to look at info regarding hernias and upper GI problems,
: : but really haven't found anything that describes symptoms including
: : the radiating pain up to my neck (it's as if my throat is suddenly
: : cut off and nausea feeling sets in).  After a while (maybe about
: : 20 minutes or less), the pain leaves, but it is VERY intense when
  : : it does happen.
: : I think I feel a small knot below my sternum, but I am not sure.
: : When I went to the doctor's for the GI, I told them the pain I feel
: : almost all the time is a soreness just below my right rib.  My stool
: : is sometimes dark, but he found no blood.
: : Do you have any ideas?  I have no insurance, and therefore can't
: : afford to go to a doctor (most won't take you around here without insurance).

  : Dear Kn,
: The pain that you decribe could originate from the gastrointestinal tract or the heart.  Depending on your age and concurrent medical conditions, you may consider a cardiac evaluation.  If the pain recurs, GI evaluation will be needed.
: This information is presented for abdominal pain.  Always ask specific questions to your personal physician.

I was just wondering how can this kind of pain be from the heart can you have pain under your right ribs from your heart? I always have this that comes and goes, also heart palps when I have reflux i had a stress test, I am 38 and a echo and they said I had a slight mvp but nothing else. I have had alot of probs with reflux, pressure in my chest and this right ribs thing, How does heart feel like reflux? I am scared I am going to have a heart attack, my dad did at age 46. I get those heart palps only when I have reflux and antacids do help, when I take them the palps and skipping go away. life can be so scarey some times I am extra nervous because of my dad. I don't smoke or drink but have a high cholesteral, I am working on it but it was 280 my hdl was 72 and I forgot but I know my ldl was high on the print out. what can one do? Thanks Laurie

Dear Laurie,
Sometimes pain is not localized and patients may have difficulty localizing the exact site of discomfprt.  This pheno, emom is re;ated to the fact that the nerves innervating the heart also innervate other strucutres.  When the nerve sensds information back to the brain, the central processing area may not be able to identify the specifci sote of the pain.
You are corret to pay a lot of attention to your cholesteol in view  of your family history of heart disease.  Best of luck controlling that cholesterol level
