side effects for metformin

About 4 years ago I started metformin at 500mg and had no problem at all.
The Dr. started changing the doseage and at 850 mg I had diarrhea and upset stomach all the time. I went off the medication to see if that was the problem and everything returned to normal. He has changed me from 500 mg  2x daily, to 750 er mg 2x times daily, then 850 regular 2x daily and that is when I really had a problem. I don't know if I am coming or going with these meds. Now he wants to put me on 500 er 4 of them daily.I really need to know if this is a side effect the diarrhea and after a while will it finally go away or will this stay forever?

Although not everyone experiences side-effects, abdominal pain and cramping along with diarrhea are some of the more common side-effects. Whether or not it will go away appears to depend on an individual's system.
