_______________
Dear Bill,
Esophageal spasm is a condition in which the muscles of the esophagus loose their rhythm (which permits passage of swallowed material from mouth to stomach) and instead contract simultaneously. Although, this can be a chronic condition, most people do not have continuous symptoms. Stress and anciety appear to exaggerate the problem. A numberr of smooth muscle relaxants have been tried as therapy. Recent evidence reports encouraging results with surgery for the small number of patients refractory to medical therapy.
