sternal pain radiating to jaw from GERD?

by mstarks3d, Aug 18, 2005 12:00AM
Hi
I have had medication resistant GERD for 30 years.  Very familiar with the pains from it often assoc with exercise. I am 64 in good health and have had stress EKG, echocardiogram and dobutamine stress test ca 3 years ago all negative.  I get modest pain from GERD relieved by antacids.  During last years I get the same sort of central sternal dull pain which appears simultaneously in my lower right jaw(rear molars and just below the right ear) when I jog but goes away if I rest a few minutes and continue the jog intermittently.  Three times I have gotten the same pains ca 30 min. after eating while sitting at a computer and they also go away in ca 10 min. I do not get the pains from strenuous weight liftine. Heart or esophagitis?
thanks
Michael

With the symptoms worsening on exertion (jogging) and goes away at rest, this is suspicious for coronary artery disease.  However, you mentioned negative stress testing 3 years ago.  Before attributing it to a GI cause, the heart has to be conclusively ruled out.  Repeating the cardiac stress testing should be considered.

If the heart has been ruled out, the GI causes can be pursued.  An upper endoscopy or upper GI series would be reasonable tests in going this route.

You can discuss this with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

After you check with a heart doctor, if he clears you of heart related pains, you might consider checking out the gallbladder and/or liver. Gallbladder pains can often be felt in the sternum area up into the jaw. I wonder if you are taking any digestive food enzymes for your reflux. A good strong probiotic would probably help as well. Hope everything is okay with your heart.
