stomach problem

by tummyyuck, Mar 30, 2007 12:00AM
Around 3 months ago I started noticing I was very constipated and could not find any over the counter medicine/lax that would give me releif. Even the meds my doc gave didnt help. I was reffered to a GI doc and in the meantime my constipation cleared up. I now have bad stomach pains. Kinda like a scraping or salt in wound feeling. I have cramps, naseau, rectal pain, bloating TERRIBLE burning and a rumbling tummy. The GI doc gave me zelnorm and nexium-neither worked.I now take achipex and a probiotic. I have tried keeping a food journal and havent found any connections. I was tested for h pylori, ab norm thyroid and wheat allergy and all looked good. I see the doc again in a few weeks and want him to do a more in depth exam but dont knwo how to go about getting him to do one. He told me I have IBS but I feel like its something more. A few other things that may/may not be realated-I have been extremely tired during the day, fatigued, headaches, pains in my legs, achey (achy), some chest pain, dizzyness.  ALso a while back my bilirubin was 6.8(very high) ultrasound came back normal. My biggest fear is cancer. What else could this be and how do I get my GI doc to do more tests.

An upper endoscopy would be a reasonable next test.  This can comprehensively evaluation for ulcers, anatomical abnormalities, and inflammation of the upper digestive tract.  Cancer of the esophagus and stomach would also be ruled out with the endoscopy.

If the symptoms continue, you can consider a 24-hr pH study to evaluate for GERD, or a gastric emptying scan to evaluate for gastroparesis.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician, or in conjunction with a GI evaluation.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
