stomache problems after eating

by tim27, Mar 19, 2003 12:00AM
I feel fine when I wake up and throughout the morning, and if I don't eat, until one hour after lunch.  Lunch goes fine and I am hungry, but one hour after I start to get upper stomache pain, like burning, cramping, slight gas, and it goes away within a few hours.  I bought a juicer recently and used to juice everyday, and it may be possible my stomache is recovering from all the fruit and vegtable juice.  I don't know.  I am very healthy otherwise, and would like your opinion because from what I understand the tests for this type of problem can be very uncomfortable- and I don't want to put myself through these tests if my body will heal on it's own.  I went to my internists and he gave me aciphex, which has not worked, though I have no heatburn at all.  Is it possible my stomache lining has been damaged by all the fruit juice and so it's sensitive, and will I heal on my own?  Or, I am looking something more serious in the face.  I have felt this way since march 10th, so eight days.  Also, any truth to drinking aloe vera as a rememdy on the stomache?  Thanks.

Hello - thanks for asking your question.

Please understand my limitations over the internet as I have neither met nor examined you. This information is for patient education only. Please see your personal physician for further evaluation.

You are describing dyspepsia.  Dyspepsia is defined as pain or discomfort centered in the upper abdomen.  Discomfort is a negative feeling that the patient does not interpret as pain, which can be characterized by or associated with fullness, early satiety, bloating, or nausea. Dyspepsia can be intermittent or continuous, and may or may not be related to meals.

Causes include peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, esophagitis, gastric cancer, biliary disease, or pancreatitis.  If the aciphex has not worked, I suggest further evaluation.  This includes upper endoscopy to evaluate for any peptic ulcer or gastritis.  You should also be tested for H Pylori, as there is a strong association between this bacteria and ulcers.  If the H Pylori test is positive, you can be treated with antibiotics.

If the endoscopy is negative, I would next proceed with either an ultrasound or CT scan.

There is no consensus within the medical community about aloe vera - there have been no large clinical trials studying this.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

I had the same problem with loose bowels. The dr finally put me on Colestid. It is a cholesterol medicine with the side effect of constipation. I have taken 1 pill in the morning and 1 pill at night for the past 8 years. It has saved my life.
