temporary feeding tube for esophagitis

by January8, Sep 27, 2009 05:33PM
My mother age 85 went into the hospital 3 weeks ago with pneumonia and the treatment caused a very bad case of esophagitis.   She started out at 124 lbs and is now down to 108.  She is 5' 9'' and a large boned woman.  She has not been able to eat much for over two weeks due to the pain.  They have given medication for thrush and GRED and BMX to kill the pain but that still did not allow her to eat much.  We are concerned that she will not be able to make up this weight loss at the pace she is making now that the pain is lessening some.  She is only able to take in appox 500 cal/day.  The family wants her to consider a temporary j-tube to help get more calories in her to build her system up.  What is your recommendation?
