to intubate or not to intubate..Or or Out Patient

by vincenzo1225, May 26, 2008 12:45PM
I am scheduled for a colonoscopy as a part on my yearly physical and also have benn diagnosed with severe sleep apnea.  During my consultation with the Gastroenterologist he mentioned he would be more comfortable doing the procedure in a hospital or instead of the usual out patient facility because of my sleep apnea.  Althouh the doctor comes highly recomended that was the last mention of how the procedure was to be performed and my feeling was that the decision was basically up to me.
Firstly, and after some research, it seems to me that the decision should be a more informed one for both of us. He should know more about my sleep apnea and I more about the actual procedure. My questions are:
1.  OR or Out patient facility?  Pros/Cons
2.  If OR, is the patient intubated prior to procedure or only if there is breathing cestation?
3.  What are the risks of being intubated, especially for a sleep apnea patient?
4.  If Out Patient, and brething becomes a problem, is intubation the solution?
5.  If Out Patient is the use of a CPAP machine adequate protection while under anesthesia?
6.  Generally, is there a difference in the types of anesthesia used in OR or Out Patient?

Thanks in advance for answers and thoughts!!   Vincent G De Palma

The link I'm going to post concerns the CPAP, however within the link it gives suggestions as to what measures hospitals (and patients) need to take when facing problems with sleep apnea. They may be of help to you: http://www.sleepapnea.org/resources/pubs/hospitalcpapuse.html
