tortuous colon

tortuous colon

My daughter (14) just got the results of her colonoscopy it said she has tortuous colon, dilated (megacolon), mild chronic nonspecific inflamation (inflammation) and mild melanosis coli. Can you please explain this for me? How do you treat tortuous colon? Thanks

She has a colon that is longer than normal and that length is allowing the colon to make more 'loops' or 'windings' than the rest of us have. Her colon is greated enlarged which can be due to long term constipation - the colon effectively 'stores' the fecal matter (enlarging it) and for whatever reason the musculature of that organ does not propel the fecal material as it should. In some cases, a megacolon can be the result of a condition known as Hirschsprung's - a defect in the movement of the neurons into certain areas of the colon during development.

Mild chronic nonspecific inflammation typically means the presence of some form of 'colitis.' In many cases - and depending upon where the inflammation is and several other factors - it can be considered to be inflammatory bowel disease.

Melanosis means a darkening of some of the cells lining the colon. It's typically attributed to using forms of 'stimulant' laxatives.

All of this needs to be discussed with your doctor.
