upper gi series

upper gi series

i had an upper gi series done this morning. While the procedure was taking place, the doctor in the room was looking at a monitor, and suddenly asked me if I had any recent weight loss and appetite loss. I replied yes. I am now worried that he saw something on the screen, that might indicate gastric cancer. This test did not involve the small bowel, I Irecently had a colonoscopy and everything was fine. I have unintentional weight loss and appetite loss, that started three months ago, accompanied by fatigue. I have had an abdominal ultrasound, Upper CT scan, heart tests and blood work, and a chest XRay. All results from these tests are fine. I am concerned as to why he asked me about weight and appetite loss, since he had no knowledge that i was experiencing those two problems.

It is possible however, that he did know, although he probably would have asked you about them beforehand, because I think it is standard practice when ordering such a procedure for them to also tell them the symptoms that caused them to order the test.

If they suspect cancer, I think what they will do is order a gallium (not sure on that spelling) scan, where they inject you with a special dye and it shows either cancerous growths or infection.

Was it a doctor in the room, or a technician?  A doctor could have probably told you what his question was about and why he asked it, though a technician wouldn't.

I'm sorry that you have to wait to find out, and I'm hoping that it isn't cancer!!!!!!  I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

The doctor did not know about the appetite and weight loss. I told the technician all the symptoms, that I had. I did not mention weight or appetite loss to the technician. My symptoms are a fluttering sensation in the diaphragm, after eating a meal or drinking any liquids. Also feeling full. The doctor and technician were both in the room, during the procedure. I asked the technician after the doctor left, rather quickly, why he asked me those questions, and the technician said the doctor always asks the patient questions, during the procedure. What is bothering me is the fact that as the doctor was looking at the monitor, he may have saw something serious, that prompted him to ask me.
