upper middle pain and burning

I am having alot of pain in the upper middle of my abdoman.  I was experiencing  the diareaha for about 6 months followed by constipation then I experienced pain upon eating in the upper right quad for about 6 weeks.  My Hyda scan showed that my gallbladder was lazy and it was removed on Dec. 23, 2008.  About 2 weeks before I had surgery I started to experience alot of pain/burning in the upper middle part of my stomach and my zantac (450mg daily) was no longer helping.  Both the Dr and I thought this would resolve after I had the gallbladder removed but it hasn't.  If anything it seems to have gotten worse.  The surgeon put me on prilosec 40 mg and it now doesn't seem to be helping much.  I am at a loss.  What could be causing this discomfort?  I had been on the zantac 300mg daily for 15 years and I also have irritable bowel syndrome.  Could these things be the contributing factors or could it be something else?  The surgeon thinks it could be a narrowed duct but now that I have the bills from the origional surgery I can't afford to have any more tests done.  Why isn't this possible problem checked when the gallbladder removed?
