Stomach pain associated with dark stools are certainly concerning for a bleeding ulcer or inflammation of the upper GI tract.

An upper endoscopy would be the test to obtain now.  This is a comprehensive test to evaluate for ulcers or inflammation.  I would also test for H Pylori, which is a bacteria associated with ulcers or inflammation.

If the upper endoscopy is negative, then testing amylase or lipase for the pancreas may be reasonable.  Before considering a liver biopsy, you may want to consider looking at the liver enzymes to see if they are elevated first.  If the liver enzymes are normal, then it is unlikely that a biopsy would be helpful.

I would certainly discuss the possibility of an endoscopy with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Note any relationship between eating time and pain as this can be useful in identifying mesenteric angina etc.
