where does e bile go after you remove the gallbladder?

by mammasue, Aug 13, 2009 11:44AM
I had my gallbladder with stones removed 15 years ago.  I had bouts of vomiting about once every two or three months which tapered off over the years. Now I still have this about once every year or year and a half, vomiting with severe pain in the upper part of my stomach like I had before my operation.  I vomit bile at these times with whatever else is there with it.
Does this come from the absence of my gallbladder?  Or is it a stomach flu or something?
Is there anything I should take to keep these bouts from reoccuring?
Thank You, Mamma

With a gallbladder, usually bile is stored up until you eat something with a lot of fats and oils and then once the body senses high fat coming after the stomach it releases bile by squeezing out the bile..and helping break down the heavy fatty meal.

Without a gallbladder, the bile just freely flows out whenever basically so normally people without a gallbladder should avoid heavy fats like cheese or the body won't be able to break it down and you'll end up with IBS-D as a result.

Now throwing up isn't normal with severe pain..what might be happening to do is "Bile reflux".  Sometimes caused by a stomach ulcer near the stomach valve opening.  You also might have h. ploryi virus of some sort causing problems.  Basically bile that freely flows is actually going into your stomach and causing gastritis and pain and such...and hence you throw up.

So the cheap home remedy would be to go on acid blockers if you can..or go do a doctor and ask for acid blockers....or you could go to a GI specialist and they'll probably do the same thing.  Also to help you not get these waves of throwing up and to help the stomach heal is to try and sleep on your right side instead of left..and not lay down immediately after you eat.  Hopefully your tummy will heal...if not you might need another endoscope to find out what actually really is going on in there.  Might be a good idea just to see a GI specialist anyway..but if you're on the poor side like me you could just try those tips out..maybe get some prilosec and hope your tummy heals (also avoid anything hard on the stomach..spicey foods..heavy sugar..)

hope that helps :S

To: also..
if you do go to a GI specialist i'd ask to check out ulcers..h. ploryi specifically...but that's just me.  Basically I have a hunch you're dealing with an ulcer and bile reflux at the same time combined.  When you throw up..is it..like..green? I think that's bile..sometimes when they do upper endoscopes if they notice bile in the stomach that's how they give you a diagnosis of bile reflux.
