Hi All, Have just come out of hospital after six days of being hooked up to aggresive
(aggressive) antibiotic
intravenousIntravenous
Intravenous pyelogram
Intravenous pyelogram (ivp) treatment and fliud, but my symptoms even though I am on a high fibre low fat diet seem to be slowly coming back. Plus this high fibre diet gives me diareagh in the long term . I,m now worried to eat anything, if any of you out there suffer from diverticular disease i,d like to hear from you with some ideas or suggestions what to do when these diets don,t suit the individual. According to my surgeon I,m too young at 47 to have this ailment but have been diagnosed for four years now and it getting increasingly more difficult to live with. Angie
I urge you to look at some books at health food stores (&/or bookstores), such as "Prescription for NUTRITIONAL HEALING" by James F. Balch, M.D. and Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C. (Nutritionist).
Look up "Diverticultis" in the index, and you will find LOTS of VERY HELPFUL IDEAS TO HELP YOU IMPROVE THIS PROBLEM!!
One important thing, is to "re-populate" your large intestine with the beneficial bacteria ("pro-biotics") that were destroyed by the anti-biotics. Examples of these are ACIDOPHILUS, and BIFIDUS (BIFIDO-BACTERIA), both available at health food stores.
If medically OK for you, drink a lot of good quality water.
I imagine there's a lot of information on the web about this, as well. I hope you feel better soon! Do check out Dr. Balch's helpful book!! Check with your doc to make sure that the book's suggestions are OK for your condition and for any meds you are on.
Sincerely,
Concerned lady

Welcome to the club. I am a 45 year old male. I was hospitalized with a severe diverticular hemmorhage in May. (a severe complication but not as bad as peritonitis) I heard the same thing, I'm too young to have this but I think because of our poor diets in the US it is going to become more common for young ones to have this. After getting my blood built back up with Procrit I had an elective surgery in August to remove part of my colon. (Sigmoid colectomy) Fortunately I avoided a colostomy. I'm back to work now and feel pretty good. I've been making sure to avoid seeds and nuts and take Metamucil almost everyday to make sure I get fiber regularly. I'm also trying to get in better shape and lose weight. Almost all adults in the US have diverticulosis to one degree or another but most never have any symptoms until later in life.
